End of March out like a Lion?

I have been talking about an active end to march for about 2 weeks now. Some models are currently giving the central plains a MAJOR storm system between 15th-20th. The GFS is very un reliable this far out, which was 8 days, but it has been showing some type of major storm system in that time frame period. Let me just show you a iamge of the GFs model on day 9;

The blue line is the 32 line.

BRRRRR! And then Warmth!

6 03 2008

BRRRRRR!

Well folks, enjoy the last little warm up for today! Highs will reach in the 30’s across most of Nebraska and Iowa today with approacing 40 in the Southern portions of those areas. The COLD FRONT is currently situated over North Dakota at this point and is just waiting to plow across the corn belt region later tonight! When it does come, you will notice it! Highs should plummet once again on Friday into the 20’s for most of Nebraska, but highs should be MUCH colder in Iowa since the COLD high pressure system will be more deeply entrenced over their with highs in the teens for highs as well as South Dakota and Minnesota. Along with the cold front, a band of snow should move through the area especially through parts of Nebraska and Iowa. Nothing much, only expect a dusting at most!

BIG Warm up!

Warmer weather shall return to th region starting on Saturday for Kansas and Missouri! Highs throughout teh region should be in the upper 30 - lower 40’s for most of Nebraska and Iowa and in the 40’s and 50’s in Kansas and Missouri. Highs north of that shall be in the 30’s for highs. Break out the shorts and t shirts and sunscreen, well maybe not the sun screen but some places could erach 60 in Nebraska Iowa, Kansas and Missouri mid next week!

BIG storm next week?

The models have been battling out the chances of this happening next week. The GFS has been flip flopping between a big storm and a weak storm. It is only 8 days away and stil has plenty of time to work things out between themselves.

Southern Plains Snowstorm and one last bout of Chilly Air!

5 03 2008

Southern Plains Snowstorm

Currently looks like the southern plains from Panhandle of Texas and Oklahoma eastward should see some significant snowfall accumulations out of a MAJOR storm developing. Currently looks like Central Oklahoma should see the brunt of the snowfall accumulations with 4-12″ of snowfall. Depending how energetic the storm gets, Thundersnow should occur with possibly 1-2″ an hour with some snow bouts. Expect this heavy snowfall then to move east into Northern and Central Arkansas with 6-10″ of snowfall expected their.

COLD AIR SET TO MOVE IN

VERY cold air is set to move in Thursday and Thursday Night across the Dakotas, Minnesota Iowa and Nebraska. Expect ahead of the front their should be some scattered snow showers with a dusting to 1″ at best with any snowfall accumulations in nebraska and Iowa. As we head into Friday, the COLD HIGH PRESSURE shall remain over the area with highs in Central and Eastern Iowa in the teens and Most of Nebraska in the 20’s with teh far north in the teens. Expect Minnesota and South Dakota to stay in the lower teens - upper teens for highs.

BIG WARM UP!!!

AHHHH. At last, the warm air is set to return! I tell ya folks, i usually LOVE winter with all the snow, but this winter has been plain dry the latter half with VERY cold air and most storms missing us! Now i would love warmer weather and even to get some thunderstorms. Anyways, the warm air will begin to move in Sunday with highs in the 40’s as far north as Nebraska and Iowa Sunday. Expect early to mid next week highs in the 50’s and 60’s and possibly 60’s as far north as Nebraska! Enjoy it! I tell ya! March can trick us sometimes!

BIG STORM SYSTEM AND STORMY LATE MARCH

I have been rattling on about the possibility of a BIG storm system sometime between the 11th and the 19th across the Central States. The latest GFS was developing a low pressure in Western Kansas with warm air feeding Northeast across the region with rain and warm temps! As the low would move east, the GFS put heavy wet snow on the backside of the storm system with strong winds. the ECMWF was also on target with this but a bit later. I also noticed that after this storm that the Gfs was developing another storm system with a more of a Zonal Flow expected. So i tell you to expect WARM weather, Severe Thunderstorms in parts of the Corn Belt region, possibly another snowstorm somewhere in our area and colder temperature outbreaks. March has proven to be one frisky month and dont let your guard down on winter yet!

Oklahoma MAJOR Snow Storm

5 03 2008

Oklahoma MAJOR Snow Storm

Their is not much going on in the weather in the OWO viewing area so i thought i might catch up on the weather in Oklahomas Snow Storm. The latest NAM and GFs model was giving Central and Eastern Oklahoma 4-12″ of new snowfall. The storm system should provide sufficient cold air for most of the precip to be all snow. A much more detailed update later on and the rest of the viewing areas forecast.

Clipper Snow System and Cold Weather to Prevail

4 03 2008

Im gonna keep this short as i am having computer problems. I’ll get right to the point to what i am expecting. I am expecting the clipper system in Western South Dakota to dive southeast through Nebraska producing anywhere from 1-5″ of new snowfall. Here is what i am expecting;

Their will also be some blowing and drifting snowfall with 15-30 MPH winds as the burst of snowfall move through the area. As we head through Thursday night the cold front and yet another clipper will move through with possibly another 1-2″ of snowfall from Eastern Nebraska into iowa. Fridays highs may very well be into the teens as far south as Northeast Nebraska and Central Iowa with 20’s south of that. As we head into the weekend the cold high pressure moves off and warm air moves in.

Maybe a more detailed update later!

Sincerely,

Craig McPeck

BIG Storm Moves East and Colder Week Ahead

WINTER STORM ALERT
Issued at 8:13 PM

BIG Storm Moves East and Colder Week Ahead

NEW TWO WEEK FORECAST JUST UPDATED, PLEASE VIEW SIDE MENU

Well folks, more snow again, then again it was not that much in Nebraska, mainly below 2″ of wet snow. It should begin to melt off tomorrow.

Areas such as Eastern Oklahoma, Southern Missouri northeast right through St Louis should see 4-8″ of new snowfall. Some ice is also likely before the transition. As we head into the latter half of the workweek, things should quiet down across the Corn Belt. Cold high pressure should move east a bit and things should warm up slightly near 40* in Nebraska and Iowa. As we head towards Tuesday Night and Wednesday, a clipper like system shall move through Nebraska and Iowa producing maybe 1-2″ at most of Snow in Eastern NEbraska and Iowa. This is on the heals of more colder air set to spill into the region. As we head into the weekend, it will get very warm once again with 60’s possibly in Kansas and Missouri and 40’s and 50’s in Nebraska and 40’s in Iowa.

Snow Day Cast

Anymore strong BIG Storms in the foreseeable future?

Yes, the GFS model and the ECMWF computer model ahve been indicating a BIG storm mid-late month, around the 14-16th of March. Let me just say that the GFs has a lot of warm air on the front side with possibility of thunderstorms and heavy snow on the Backside of the storm. I dont want to get too much into detail here, but the end of March may prove to be a VERY stormy and snow one if things come together properly.

Interesting Article

Credit to Unknowncountry.com

We once reported that it rains MORE on weekends. Now scientists say it rains LESS on weekends. But they all agree on the reason: air pollution.
A new NASA study has found that summer storms in the Southeaster US occur more often midweek than on weekends. They think the cause of this is air pollution created by traffic exhaust and other emissions which creates small particles that tend to “seed” clouds.

LiveScience.com quotes researcher Thomas Bell as saying, “… It’s well known that particulate matter has the potential to affect how clouds behave, and this kind of evidence makes the argument stronger for a link between pollution and heavier rainfall.”

Until next time…
